UCLA junior and Pacific Palisades resident Kai Forbath was named the 2009 winner of the Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award last Thursday on the ESPN College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Florida. The honor came on the heels of his being named First-Team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the American Football Coaches Association.
Heading into the Bruins' EagleBank Bowl game against Temple on December 29, Forbath has made 26 of 29 field goal attempts and 22 of 23 extra-point kicks this season. He is second in the nation in field goals per game (2.17) and is 23 for 23 inside 50 yards.
Forbath earned four letters at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, where he led his team to three CIF Southern Section championships and a 35-1 career record. In his last two prep seasons he made 26 of 33 field goal tries, 134 of 135 extra-point attempts and scored 213 points. He played in both the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the CaliFlorida Bowl and was rated the No. 1 placekicker in the country by rivals.com.
